  • BORDERLINE

"People on both sides are dying for no reason. No reason at all. The bottomline is: Let's stop with the suffering." — on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict (and all other border conflicts in the world)

This game takes inspiration from the classic Battleship Game using figurines instead of ships. This is a response to border conflicts particularly the one between Israel and Palestine and the massive wall separating them. It reinforces the idea that the wall closes off any desire of ending the conflict and that the ones suffering the most are the civilians.

Laser cut and engraved on 3mm plywood.
The living hinge transforms the wall panels into a packaging for the game.

  • CASUALTIES OF WAR

Casualties of War is an infographic about women, children and families affected by the Syrian Civil War. Using the living hinge once more, the viewer is able to get a glimpse of the devastation within the country.

Laser cut and engraved on 3mm plywood.
The living hinge allows the viewer to peek beyond the walls.

  • ANTI

"When you're designed against, you know it." — Ocean Howell

ANTI is a protest against defensive spikes installed all over London's buildings. These spikes has become an icon against the homeless and does not negate that fact if one were to justify them as being against people in general. Like skateboarding deterrents, when one is designed against, no one else sees it but the ones targeted.

    Laser cut 3mm plywood sheet.
    Screwback spikes.
    Double knit yarn.

  • GLIMMER OF HOPE

"With close to 4 million refugees, the scale of the crisis is overwhelming. This report tells the stories of the real people behind the numbers, in their own words. Many of them have been through hell, they have endured heart-breaking ordeals and face daily struggles in their current lives as refugees. Resettlement can help offer them a much needed lifeline - a glimmer of hope for a better future." — Sherif Elsayed-Ali

This piece is a collection of personal accounts of Syrian survivors affected by the civil war. The shadowed 'HOPE' represents the little bit of hope that they carry with them outside the walls. Glimmer of Hope is part of the Border Nation project where visitors are able to visually interact with the piece by seeing shadow of the panels forming the word 'HOPE'.

  • FAMILY MONOGRAMS

This project is about how personal information can inform the creation and use of typography to convey history, identity and preserve a legacy. Gathering personal information about my paternal great grandfather and maternal grandmother, it helped build a biography, a narative and supported the creation of these monograms.

    Henrik Boudewyn Rompis
My paternal great grandfather was born in the North Sulawesi province in Indonesia where it was orginally inhabited by Philipine-language speaking people, then colonized by the Portugese, then Spanish and lastly the Dutch. The Rompis clan belonged to the Minahasa tribe and were strongly Protestant (although Henrik was a Seventh-day Adventist). They spoke Bahasa Manado and Tonsea, a sub-tribal austronesian language.

    Rokiah Bte Abdul Wahab
My maternal grandmother was born in pre-indendence Singapore where she was the youngest of a Chinese family. Not much was known about them as she was adopted by a Malay family when she was a just child during the Japanese occupation. She studied in an Arabic school and only knew how to write in Jawi, the arabic alphabet for writing the Malay language in South East Asia.
